About Us

HOLY SPIRIT MONASTERY

Our Mission:

We, the Sisters and Friars of HSM, are responding to God’s call to live in solitude and silence in and for the Church according to an ancient form of radical Christian discipleship focused on seeking and finding God in community where we “are of one heart and soul and everything is held in common” (Acts 4: 32-33).

Our Rule of Life:

We live the Rule of Saint Benedict, praising God in our prayer, our meditative reading of Scripture, our work, and our hospitality, obeying the call of the Holy Spirit to ceaseless prayer and sharing the sufferings of the present time until the Lord returns (Rom 8:18-23).n

OUR VISION:

We, the Sisters and Friars of HSM, are a community who live Gospel values as expressed in the Rule of St Benedict. Through our monastic life and wise stewardship, we nurture contemplative presence in service of Church and society.

Core Value Statements:

Community: We are committed to one another as we live the monastic way of life according to the Rule of St Benedict, integrating new members and incorporating the gifts we all bring to monastic life.

Prayer: We are committed to monastic prayer, both communal and personal.

Hospitality: We are committed to welcoming all people. As HSM, all guests who present themselves are to be welcomed.

Silence: We are committed to listening to God through the gift of a quiet internal spirit nurtured by the monastic environment.

Stewardship: We are committed to a reverence of all creation and the responsible use of our human gifts and goods.

Generatively: We are committed to fostering creativity, learning, and leadership within and outside of our monastic community.

Social Responsibility: We are committed to learn about communities outside our monastery and to respond in the spirit of St Benedict as we strive to actively carry out the Social Teachings of the Church

The unseen core of our life is, and always will be, the quiet, persevering quest for God through a life lived in common according to the Rule of HSM. That is what gives meaning and purpose to what we are trying to do.

“I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us” (Philippians 3:14).
